The Sailing Division is an active club that is focused on promoting sailing facilities and events for Hobie 16 boats and sailors at the Royal Papua Yacht Club.

For those that don’t know, a Hobie 16 is a catamaran (2 hulls) that is 16 feet in length and has a mainsail and a jib sail and generally requires 2 sailors (ie. a skipper and a crew). The Hobie 16 is an internationally recognised class of boat that has its own world championships each year (held in a different country each year) and there are many National Championship events and regattas held in many different countries around the world each year.

Operating Hours

A typical yearly events schedule for Hobie Fleet 405 consists of:

February-March
A training course for anyone interested in learning how to sail a Hobie 16

April-September
Club races are held on the Fairfax Harbor every second Sunday morning. There are 3 racing Series through the year that are made up of approximately 12 races in each Series.

October
Club Championship racing is held over 3 Sunday mornings.

Other special events that occur through the year are the Commodores Cup, Remembrance Day Regatta and Stern Chaser race that involve all classes of boats with staggered starts.

The Fishermans Island race and the race to Basilisk Passage are longer distance races and the Fishermans Island race includes a short stay on the island before returning to the Marina.

Most of the boats are owned privately however the Club does have one or two club boats that are used for training and can be hired by experienced sailors for a small fee.

All Hobie 16’s are parked in the Hobie parking area which is very close to the ramp that leads into the Marina water. Boats are normally rigged in the parking area and can be easily pushed to the nearby ramp using the available plastic wheels provided by the club.

The wind conditions here in Port Moresby are ideal for Hobie sailing. Winds gradually build from April through to November, and for most of the season, it is common to see Hobies flying across the harbor on one hull.
